Today marks the anniversary of the tragic loss of MV Derbyshire and all onboard on 9th September 1980. The Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society pauses to remember this devastating maritime disaster and honour all those who perished.

In this tragedy, we also herald the extraordinary dedication and commitment of the families of those whose lives were lost. They worked tirelessly for justice, fighting to clear the names of the deceased and highlighting the truth – that their loved ones were innocent victims of a terrible structural failure, not human error.

Their unwavering determination led to a reopened investigation and ultimately revealed the real cause of this disaster, ensuring that the crew’s reputation was restored and vital lessons were learned for maritime safety.

We remember their loss. We honour their memory. We celebrate the courage of those families who refused to accept injustice.

The Society is proud to be the home of the MV Derbyshire Award for Maritime Security, continuing the legacy of improved safety standards that emerged from this tragedy.

Never forgotten. Always remembered.
