‘From the Archive’ for March features fire, marine and general rescues spanning from 1897 to 2004.
March 1897
General Rescue
A Silver Medal and Vote of Thanks were awarded to Police Sergeant John Kitchen, for having, on 3rd March 1897, grappled with a man attempting suicide, and taken a loaded revolver from him. 10s. were given to Police Constable James Morison, for assisting to disarm a would-be suicide on 3rd March.
March 1914
Fire Rescue
Postman Thomas Dalton was awarded a Bronze medal and Certificate of Thanks, for rescuing a woman and three children from a house on fire in Upper Hill Street, on 7th March 1914. George Coughlin was awarded a Certificate of Thanks for assisting with the rescue.
March 1917
Marine Rescue
On 21st March 1917, William Menzies came to the rescue of an injured man at Alexandra Dock. He was awarded a Silver medal and Certificate of Thanks for descending into the dock to assist the injured man who had become immersed between the ship and the quay.
March 2002
Fire Rescue
A Bronze Fire Medal, Certificate of Thanks & £25 were awarded to David Dean, for having rescued two children aged 2 and 4 who were trapped by dense smoke and fire in a first-floor bedroom at a dwelling house in Calder Road, Everton, on 19th March 2002.
March 2004
General Rescue
Cadet Gary Creed was awarded a Bronze General Medal and Certificate for having, without thought of the danger to himself, gone to the aid of a man being viciously attacked by six youths near Upton Library, Upton on 4th March 2004.
March 2004
Marine Rescue
A Bronze Marine Medal and Certificate of Thanks to Les Moulsdale, Leading Crewman, Mersey River Rescue, for having entered the river, and despite the treacherous and dangerous tidal conditions, rescued a woman from drowning on 28th March 2004.
