This month’s ‘From the Archive’ includes an award from 1902 that was given in recognition of the presence of mind and bravery in dealing with the first electrical rescue case dealt with by the Society.

February 1902
General Rescue

A Silver General medal, Vote of Thanks, and £2 were given to Henry Graham for assisting in the rescue of two men, who were encircled by folds of telephone wire highly charged with electric fluid, at an accident in Pembroke Place on the evening of 4th February 1902. This being the first electrical case dealt with by the Society, the Committee, to mark its recognition of Graham’s presence of mind and bravery, have made this special award.

February 1912
Marine Rescue

Sailors involved in the rescue of the crew of the ship Erne in the mid-Atlantic received awards in February 1912.  A Silver medal and Certificate of Thanks were awarded to Captain W. Masters, Leyland Line, s.s. Cuban; while Silver medal, Binoculars and Certificate of Thanks were given to Chief Officer Percy Charles Laight, in command of the lifeboat, and £1 to each of the lifeboat’s crew, for gallantly rescuing the crew of nine on the 8th February 1912. The ship became dismasted and waterlogged on 1st February while on a voyage from Boston to Buenos Ayres (sic), and before being sighted the crew had been without food for four days.

General Rescue

Liverpool City Police Constable Leslie James received a Bronze General Medal and Certificate, for stopping a loose runaway horse in Lime Street, Liverpool, on 11th February 1953.

February 2018
Marine Rescue

A Bronze Marine Medal and Certificate were awarded to Anthony Worrall, for going into the sea, fighting through waves, the current and freezing temperature to locate and rescue a female who had walked in and disappeared from view, at Blundellsands, Merseyside on 12th February 2018. Though soaking wet and cold himself, he administered first aid to the female, before she regained consciousness. The Police report without his actions it was highly likely the female would not have survived.

February 2020
Fire Rescue

A Bronze Fire Medal and Certificate were presented to Kaiser Hussain, who entered a burning room in a house to take control and rescue a suicidal female who was intent on not leaving the scene at Nelson, Lancashire, on 27th February, 2019. He showed great resilience and determination and through quick thinking and brave action undoubtedly saved her  life. Letters of Commendation were also present to Police Community Support Officers Andrew Mitchell for his calm and professional actions in dealing with members of the public and Daniel Richards for his actions in dealing with a suicidal member of the public.
